Youth Photos Shift the Northside Narrative

August 2015

This summer, EMERGE Link youth have been adding to the positive narrative of the Northside experience while expanding their photography skills. In summer 2014, the Link program (after school and summer enrichment for children in EMERGE’s housing program), formed a partnership with EDIT, a nonprofit that empowers youth through the arts. Together, we provided a summer photography course to Link youth ages 6 - 13. This year, many of those students returned for their second year capturing images of North Minneapolis.

We were blown away!

It is clear that the children have artistic vision and an important story to share. The photography allows them a venue to tell their story and show what North Minneapolis means to them. The students continued to focus on the True Northside theme of last summer, but also incorporated the idea of highlighting what is available to kids in summer. Said Angela Owens, the instructor, “We surveyed the kids about where they like to go in summer, and then chose where to shoot together.”

Students also spent more time learning to use editing software, in large part thanks to the computer labs that were available at the newly renovated EMERGE Career & Technology Center. Said Owens, “They each had their own computer and additional time to experiment. The lab was a great resource this year.”

The artwork was displayed on August 6th for families and friends of EMERGE & EDIT. At the gallery opening, 8 year old Freeman said, “Editing and using the camera was fun!” and 13 year old Jennica added, “I like taking photos because you capture moments and have memories forever.” We hope that these children’s images continue to add to a more positive portrayal of Northside neighborhoods.
