Victoria's Story

Wouldn't let her past limit her...

VictoriaVictoria first learned of EMERGE in 2005 when she sought housing support for her family. But she needed more direct assistance after spending a year incarcerated.

“I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, but never a felon, and I didn’t know how to wear that,” Victoria told us.

After completing EMERGE’s New Beginnings Career Workshop in April of 2010, Victoria felt comfortable explaining her background to potential employers. EMERGE’s staffing agency, EmergeWORKS, placed her first as a temp with a company, and she was eventually hired on permanently.

Building on that success, Victoria was hired by the USPS in the fall of 2013 as a mail clerk. Within a few months, she worked her way up to letter carrier. “Since being released from prison, I’ve never been unemployed and I have to acknowledge EMERGE for all their help. It’s essential to have the support of people with experience on the other side, who have faced similar barriers.”

We applaud the Postal Service for their willingness to consider giving second chances. Thanks USPS for considering all cases as individuals and helping people like Victoria rebuild their futures.
