17 Graduates Now Prepared for IT Careers
On Thursday, April 9th EMERGE and Minnesota Computers for Schools (MCFS) celebrated our first cohort of IT Essentials in Cedar Riverside. The students are the first to complete their IT training at EMERGE’s new Career Lab at Riverside Plaza. The banquet was attended by over 40 people: graduates, family members, instructors and supporters, including Minneapolis City Councilmember Abdi Warsame. Seventeen students earned their industry-recognized CISCO IT Essentials certification and completed a hands-on, in-depth training on computer hardware and operating systems.
IT Essentials is a time intensive course - students attended training from 6 – 8pm every Monday through Thursday for 14 weeks. MCFS Workforce Manager, Kate Medd, said, “There was one student who worked until 5:00 in Inver Grove every day and STILL made it to class every day!” We are proud to share that all of the graduates achieved 75% attendance and earned a laptop provided by MCFS. In addition to daily classes, students were also encouraged to complete a 50 hour internship in the IT field. One student, Assad Isaak, had already completed the 50 hour internship and was recognized at the celebration; five other students were actively working towards their internship hours. The graduates are now prepared for careers in IT/technical support, field service technician, help desk, network support and more.
After such a rigorous course, you might think the students would be ready for a break. But not these motivated grads! We are especially pleased to announce that 13 of the students have signed up for our A+ certification course, a higher level IT certification offered by EMERGE and Minnesota Computers for Schools in North Minneapolis starting this week.
In March, 2015 President Obama named Minneapolis one of 20 TechHire cities. EMERGE’s IT Essentials training directly serves the primary goal of the initiative to give minorities access to technology education and training. We are proud to work with the city and other partners to develop talent for the future. EMERGE just recently kicked off our first women-only IT Ready cohort in direct partnership with the City of Minneapolis. This is in partnership with Creating IT Futures Foundation and is provided at the EMERGE Career and Technology Center, in North Minneapolis.
