Northside Scoops Ice Cream
Youth Entrepreneurs' Success
This summer was the beginning of Northside Scoops, an entirely EMERGE youth run ice cream venture in North Minneapolis. The business launched at FLOW Northside Arts Crawl and completely sold out in one afternoon. Says youth participant Desmond, “That was a great achievement. We met our quota and almost tripled.”
The business got its start through EMERGE & NEON’s, inaugural Youth Entrepreneurship program for youth ages 16 – 21 in North Minneapolis. Says Nick Campbell, Youth Entrepreneurship Coordinator, “The idea started because when we were recruiting youth for internships in the past, so many expressed interest in starting their own business and there was really no outlet for them.” This program was started to address those needs.
The participants learned what it takes to start a business. Youth program participant, Anaya, shared a bit about the business savvy she gained, “I learned how to start a business. Where to get the supplies from and how to do it. We had to research. We had to calculate number of scoops you have then divide by cost so you know how much you pay per scoop; then you need to add napkins, spoons, bowl, cone into the price. That helps you price for the customer.”
The youth got the idea for the business because they realized there was no local ice cream shop in North Minneapolis to compete with the fast food chains. They were able to capitalize on this, earn money, and build a business from scratch. Said Campbell, “The most rewarding part for me are those moments where they feel empowered to do something. They show personal investment & excitement for the project. When they understand it is in their hands.”
Anaya said if it weren’t for the program, she’d be, “Doing nothing. At home.” Instead, she was able to gain valuable skills and contribute positively to the community. The youth have taken the profit from FLOW and invested it into purchasing more ice cream. They will continue to sell ice cream out of K’s Deli every afternoon through the end of the entrepreneurship program on August 15.
Said Desmond, “This will help me in future. I can apply the same principles for a different business.” We are proud to have worked with such driven youth and hope that this program will inspire these young entrepreneurs to start future businesses in North Minneapolis.
Thank you to NEON for their partnership & Youthprise for their financial support of this program!
