As
soon as the zoning details can be ironed out and
the developers can close on the property,
renovation of the city-owned 1101 West Broadway
Building can begin. Its backers hope the
rehabilitation helps give a spark to a nascent
effort to turn the North Side's main
thoroughfare into a bustling center for the arts
and small business.
The developers have put together a
public-private partnership to own the vacant
brick building at the high-visibility corner of
W. Broadway and Emerson Avenue N., and to
operate it with a City-County Federal Credit
Union location on the first floor and the
offices of the EMERGE Center, a social services
provider, on the second floor.
In
addition, a 700-square-foot coffee shop, the
Bean Scene, would be at street level. The
developers hope to begin work on the extensive
rehabilitation job before winter sets in and
have a grand opening next spring.
