AGENCY SUMMARY:
Emerge is a social enterprise focused on developing human capital by connecting disadvantaged individuals with economic opportunities. This work takes place in four related areas – workforce, supportive housing, business ventures, and community development – and it gets done by activating a network of partners. Our big objective is to power social momentum.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree in Social Work or Human Services, preferred.
- Two years of experience working with homeless families, adults or youth, preferred.
- Experience working with communities of color, low-income, homeless, and multi-stress families.
- Must be able to become certified as Family Development Specialist within one year of hire date.
- Knowledge of and experience with street cultures, ethnic/racial/cultural communities and issues of poverty.
- Knowledge of/ability to learn about the current homelessness issues affecting families and youth.
- Effective communication skills; written and verbal.
- Ability to lead group activities and support groups.
- Access to reliable transportation and the ability to meet agency driving requirements for transporting clients.
- Ability to motivate others (staff, participants and others).
- Skilled in the use of MS Word, Excel, Internet, email, and databases.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (some evenings or weekends; on-call).
- Ability to work respectfully and communicate effectively with different cultures, groups, and languages.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Recruit, screen, and conduct intakes for new families and determine eligibility to public benefits.
- Work in a Father’s Initiative Program to promote self-sufficiency.
- Assist with escorting families to appointments as necessary.
- Assess immediate needs of families through on-going case management.
- Assist families establish short and long-term goals; provide on-going encouragement, motivation, and support.
- Assist families by making appropriate internal and external referrals to/for substance abuse treatment, medical/dental care, financial education, mental health, child protection, job placement/readiness services, training, and educational services to promote increased levels of self sufficiency.
- Maintain accurate records and case notes in participant files with written documentation of participant/family issues and/or progress.
- Provide effective short-term crisis intervention to individuals and families.
- Provide crises advocacy and emergency assistance necessary to support families.
- Establish and maintain professional boundaries; develop positive relationships with participant-tenants, and be seen as a positive role model for both adults and youth.
- Work with housing team to develop and implement on-site and off-site programming for adults and youth.
- Assist housing staff in maintaining a climate of clear expectations for programming and daily living.
